It was Rahul Gandhi's 'Modi surname' remarks during a rally in Kolar ahead of the 2019 general elections that saw a case of criminal defamation filed against him at a court in Surat, Gujarat. The case was filed by Gujarat BJP MLA Purnesh Modi.

The court on March 23 held him guilty and convicted him to a two-year-jail term but gave him a month's time to appeal against the sentence.

The conviction in the case and the two-year jail term got Rahul Gandhi disqualified from the Lok Sabha. He was a Lok Sabha MP from Kerala's Wayanad.

Trinamool Congress leaders will stage a protest at premise of the Parliament in Delhi on Wednesday to concide with that of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata against the Centre.

The CM will demonstrate a sit-in protest for two days in front of BR Ambedkar statue at Esplanade in Kolkata agianst the Centre for halting the release of funds to the state.

The West Bengal government has rasied the issue several times in the past alleging that the Centre did not distributed funds to the state ‘desperately’.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendhu Adhikari in September last year wrote a letter to the central government accusing Mamata Banerjee of  ‘illegal diversion of funds’ allotted by the Centre.

Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee’s nephew and TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee will address a seperate rally at Shaheed Minar in Kolkata. Banerjee will address a rally against the central government’s “anti-people policy” and “stepmotherly attitude” towards the state.

As per the media reports, Abhishek Banerjee’s rally will target the Centre over the alleged misuse of central investigation agencies. In the latest, the Calcutta High Court has given “conditional” nod to the rally to be headed by Abhishek Banerjee.

The court has asked the police to install CCTV cameras in the area to monitor the movements and said that the police will be reponsible if any untoward incident takes place.

Meanwhile, it has asked the protestors as well to not make any provoking remarks.
